Guides to Codes and Practices Streets Opening review

SOC_Guide_2009 1

On the 22 March 2017 SOCC members met to review Guides to Codes and Practices Streets Opening. Meetings will be held monthly under the guide review is complete.

The not-for-profit Nat Spec will also be invovled in the process and will have ongoing ownership of the guide once review is finalised. The current guide has not been reviewed since 2009.

The Guide to Codes and Practices for Streets Opening is published to document industry practice and provide essential information and guidance on managing street openings for the provision of underground utility Services. It continues to be an authoritative reference  for Local Councils, Utility/Service Providers and their contractors throughout NSW.

The Guide has been available for over 40 years, with editions printed in 1969, 1980, 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007. However, some of the codes and practices were adopted as early as 1932.

I was hoping that the SOC guide would be updated as it doesn't reflet current allocation practices (in the Central Coast at least) & doesn't highlight the road safety implications as well as it should.

This continues to be an issue that we struggle with. DBYD has continued to provide a good service. However, many people in the Civil construction Industry are still having way too many service strikes. I would welcome an update on the Conference with some best practice options for people to consider.
